Unleash Your Visual Genius- Solving Problems With Simple Pictures

Date: 8 Dec 2023 (Fri)
Time: 9 am to 5 pm (8 hours)
Venue: Agora co-learning space, HarbourFront Centre, 1 Maritime Square, #04-01 Lobby C
Suitable for: Ages 8-12

How can children solve problems they face more easily? Visualise and draw out the problem in pictures.
How can they think and remember what is taught in school better? Draw out the concepts.

There has been extensive research that show how visualization and drawing help to sharpen thinking. Children, in particular, can benefit from visual thinking skills for learning and problem-solving as their cognitive and language abilities are not well developed yet. As such, they can get overwhelmed by problems they face in daily life.

If I can’t picture it, I can’t understand it.
– Albert Einstein

Based on the latest discoveries in vision science, this 1-day Holiday workshop teaches kids visual thinking strategies and the toolkit by Dan Roam, author of 5 international bestsellers, including ‘The Back of the Napkin – Solving Complex Problems with Simple Pictures’. Businesses and organisations in Singapore and all over the world have adopted his toolkit and found breakthroughs in problems they were trying to solve.

Now adapted for children, we show kids that drawing simple pictures can clarify their thinking, solve problems and come up with innovative ideas. We help children tap into their visual abilities to break problems down into parts, process them, and explore solutions. The show how these visualisation strategies can help them learn Math, Science and Languages. Children will be taught what to draw and how to draw in fun and easy ways.

Every child can do it—no artistic talent required. Children will walk away from our workshop with an extra life skill that is applicable to all kinds of situations. Whether it is dealing with academic learning or challenges at home, these powerful visual strategies work!

Content and Methodology

Children will be introduced to the visual alphabet and <6><6> Visual Thinking Toolkit, then taught how to apply them to common scenarios they might face in their daily lives. Examples include:

  • how to break down any problem for clarification and solutioning
  • how to make concepts learnt in school more fun and easy to remember
  • how to plan an event, manage time and resources (e.g. a birthday party)
  • how to think through various factors to make a choice (e.g. which pet to buy)

These application tasks will be presented through various activities, including mini-competitions, treasure hunt, games, individual as well as group drawing. We partner Agora Co-learning Space to give children an inspiring environment. Agora has a play area, library and outdoor lawn. Our activities are planned around these spaces to inspire the children to learn through play. Children will have lots of fun as well as explore their creative side.
