Visual Thinking Workshop for APSN Katong School Teachers

On 28 Dec 2022, 63 educators from APSN Katong took part in a full-day visual literacy workshop. Other than helping teachers understand the theories behind Visual Thinking, we introduced Dan Roam’s <6><6> framework and SQVID and showed teachers how to use these visual strategies in lesson planning, delivery and material design. When visual thinking is applied to lesson design, lessons are more creative, compelling and impactful.

The workshop was well-received by participants, and many provided positive feedback that they enjoyed the programme. By tapping on both the logical and creative mind, teachers found that as they drew out pictures related to a topic, the scope of ideas generated for lesson planning  expanded. Our simple visual toolkits had also opened up many new classroom teaching ideas that could help the children break down complex ideas and remember what they learn. The teachers left with new arsenal to start the 2023 school year.

Here’s what some teachers said after the workshop:

“I think the Visual Thinking Workshop for Educators helps to broaden our visual thinking skills by igniting our innate abilities that were dormant all this while.” ~ Ms Dee

“I think SQVID framework helped to elaborate and break down topics and concepts. It helps in guiding our train of thought. Our visuals are versatile and act as an equalizer.” ~ APSN Katong teacher

“My takeaway is that visual teaching really helps one to understand concepts and comprehend messages/ theories better. By using the <6><6> framework, it guides us to document our thoughts to deliver a productive lesson.” ~ APSN Katong teacher

“I think the workshop has helped me to understand how to simplify bigger and more complex ideas. This helps me to focus more sharply and makes it easier to teach teenagers. Drawing and illustrations make it more comfortable for students to understand.” ~ APSN Katong teacher
